After a short drive out of the city we take a short hike and fill our lungs with fresh air. We then continue to gradually make our way further inland, to the valleys of Borgarfjörður. The area is well known for it’s fertile farmlands, sheep and cows as well as all sorts of vegetables.
Along our trail we sample some of the local food production. We stop for lunch in the vicinity of Kleppjárnsreykir geothermal area, where vegetables and fruits grow very well in open fields as well as geothermal greenhouses. Geothermal areas are an interesting natural phenomenon offering a few surprises. From this natural hotspot we cross valleys and mountains to reach Erpsstaðir dairy farm where we get a good tour of the premises.
Helga and Þorgrímur at Erpsstaðir are true pioneers of artisanal food production in Iceland, where tradition meets innovation. The Erpsstadir creamery produces a unique skyr praline, made of traditional Icelandic skyr and white chocolate, a true taste bud magnet. We will certainly also try their famous ice cream called “Kjaftæði,” the most common Icelandic word for “nonsense,” literally translates as “mouth frenzy”.
Returning southwards we make a beauty stop at a picturesque waterfall before coming to Borgarnes, a lively little town by the sea. In a cozy wooden house in the heart of town we will enjoy a delicious evening meal of best local ingredients. With full stomachs and light hearts we finish the tour back in Reykjavik. A full day of memorable culinary and scenic impressions.
