THE HEART OF ICELAND
NATURAL HIGHLIGHTS & CULINARY EXPERIENCE
GOLDEN CIRCLE WITH FOOD AND CULTURE
Rugged lava fields, lush waterfalls and bubbling hot springs (geysers) are among the iconic hallmarks of the Icelandic landscape. The Heart of Iceland day tour takes us for short walks through Thingvellir lava fields, Gullfoss waterfall and sprouting hot springs in Haukadalur for an intense nature encounter. The route is called the Golden Circle and takes its name from Gullfoss - the Golden Waterfall. For a deeper experience of the culture and history of the Icelandic people, this tour offers a multi-layered experience combining visits to well known natural highlights, local delicacies, and insight into various stories of people along this popular route.
The open lava fields of Thingvellir National Park have a place in every Icelanders heart. Their parliament was established in Thingvellir as early as 930 and for centuries people from the whole country gathered here once a year to revise the law and settle disputes. Thingvellir is set in a scenic rift valley where the movement of the tectonic plates can be understood. Due to its history and natural phenomena, Thingvellir today is a Unesco Heritage Site.
The tour continues to an eco village founded in 1930 based on a truly pioneering vision of a life of sustainability, culture and equality. In the small community inhabitants with varied abilities work side by side in vegetable farming, arts and crafts.
Our next stop is Skálholt, for centuries a vibrant cultural and religious hub. In the middle ages Skálholt was a bishop's seat, center of knowledge and a place of power and prestige. For sure there has been some fine dining at Skálholt and we get to enjoy a lunch of innovative local delicacies based on ancient Icelandic traditions.
Gullfoss also has a story to share. As we enjoy the glorious presence of this iconic waterfall, we can be thankful for the efforts of an early environmentalist who fought for its preservation in critical times. At the exciting hot springs of Haukadalur, we stroll in between bubbling hot springs. Some of these springs are quite active, sprouting water towards the sky at short intervals.
The Heart of Iceland is an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy the most famous natural pearls of Iceland while learning about the people who through the ages walked on these grounds.
